5 Tips to choose your perfect Staircase Design

Modern staircases can make a statement. By interacting with their environment and injecting character into a project, stairs can be the focal point of any interior design. Historically, the staircase was less a design aspect and more functional—they were but a transition from one floor to another. Upstairs only lead to private quarters. But things change, and so have staircases.

Not sure which staircase is right for you? We've put together these 5 top tips when choosing a staircase....

Tip 1 - Space available

  • Look at the available space for the staircase and think about a functional design.
  • If you have a tiny house, opt for a straight or L-shaped staircase.
  • If you have more space, consider a U-shape, curved, or helical staircase.
  • Provide basic information like ceiling opening measures and floor to floor height to get the perfect stair solution.

Tip 2 - Stair design guide

  • Depending on the space available you can hence choose from many stairs shapes and layouts.
  • Open staircases are the most popular and comfortable type of staircase.
  • They can be designed to fit any space and go in any configuration.
  • 90degrees turn staircases have a landing or kites at the staircase entrance, midway, or at the top.
  • Half–turn staircases consist of two straight parallel flights connected by 180 degree turn . They are also called U-shaped stairs.
  • Helical or curved staircases don't require a central column and come in many different styles.
  • Combination or mixed staircases have a spiral staircase with an entrance or exit with straight steps.

Tip 3 - Design, style and materials

  • Different types of wood can be used to build a staircase.
  • Powder coated steel, stainless steel, or glass may also be used for the balustrade.
  • A combination of materials is often the best choice for an extraordinary and timeless look.
  • Staircases are now central features in any space and must be perfectly integrated with the overall interior design, being this a small private house, a big villa, a hotel, a venue centre a shopping mall, a new build office or others
